Jane Means Appleton was born on 12 March 1806, in Hampton, New Hampshire. She was the daughter of Elizabeth Means Appleton and Reverend Jesse Appleton. Jane Means Appleton married Franklin Pierce (23 November 1804 - 8 October 1869) on 19 November 1834, in Amherst. He was the son of Anna Kendrick Pierce and Benjamin Pierce. He was a member of the U.S. House of Representatives. The couple had three children.

In 1837, Franklin Pierce became a U.S. Senator. She gave birth to her last child, Benjamin Pierce on 13 April 1841. In 1842, Franklin Pierce resigned as Senator. The family returned to Concord, in New Hampshire. In 1853, Franklin Pierce was elected the 14th President of the United States. Their son, Benjamin Pierce died in a train accident on 16 January 1853, in Massachusetts. Franklin Pierce served as the President of the United States from 4 March 1853, in Washington. His presidency ended on 4 March 1857. Jane Pierce died aged 57, on 2 December 1863, in Andover, Massachusetts. She was buried at the Old North Cemetery, in Concord, New Hampshire. Franklin Pierce died on 8 October 1869, in Concord. He was buried beside his wife at the Old North Cemetery, in Concord, New Hampshire.
