19th Cent. Augusta of Saxe-Weimar, German Empress and Queen Consort of Prussia.

Augusta Marie Luise Katharina was born on 30 September 1811, in Weimar. She was the daughter of Maria Pavlovna of Russia (16 February 1786 - 23 June 1859) and Charles Frederick, Grand Duke of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach (2 February 1783 - 8 July 1853). Her maternal grandparents were Maria Feodorovna, Empress Consort of Russia (25 October 1759 - 5 November 1828) and Paul I, Emperor of Russia (1 October 1754 - 23 March 1801). Her paternal grandparents were Louisa Augusta of Hesse-Darmstadt (30 January 1757 - 14 February 1830) and Karl August, Grand Duke of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach (3 September 1757 - 14 June 1828). Marie Luise's parents were married on 3 August 1804. Her siblings were: Paul Alexander Karl Constantin Frederick August (25 September 1805 - 10 April 1806), Marie Luise Alexandrina (3 February 1808 - 18 January 1877) and Karl Alexander August Johann (24 June 1818 - 5 January 1901). She was painted by the artist Franz Xaver Winterhalter (1805-1873). Her sister, Marie Luise married Prince Charles of Prussia (29 June 1801 - 21 January 1883) on 26 May 1827, in Charlottenburg. Augusta was engaged to Prince Wilhelm of Prussia (22 March 1797 - 9 March 1888) on 25 October 1828. He was the son of Louise of Mecklenburg-Strelitz (10 March 1776 - 19 July 1810) and Friedrich Wilhelm III, King of Prussia. The elder brother of Prince Charles of Prussia. Augusta and Wilhelm of Prussia were married on 11 June 1829, in the Chapel of Schloss Charlottenburg.

Her father-in-law, Friedrich Wilhelm III died on 7 June 1840. He was succeeded by her brother-in-law as, Friedrich Wilhelm IV (15 October 1795 - 2 January 1861). Her father, Charles Friedrich died on 8 July 1853. Her daughter, Princess Louise married Frederick, Grand Duke of Baden in 1856. Her son, Prince Frederick Wilhelm married Victoria, Princess Royal (21 November 1840 - 5 August 1901) on 25 January 1858, in the Royal Chapel of St. James Palace. She was the daughter of Victoria, Queen of the United Kingdom (24 May 1819 - 22 January 1901) and Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha (26 August 1819 - 14 December 1861). Her mother, Maria Pavlovna died on 23 June 1859, in Weimar. Frederick Wilhelm IV died on 2 January 1861. He was succeeded by her husband, as Wilhelm I. In 1864, Augusta founded the National Women's Association. In 1866, the Austro-Prussian War ended. In 1870, the Franco-Prussian War started. Wilhelm I was proclaimed German Emperor on 18 January 1871, in the Palace of Versailles. Her sister, Marie Luise died on 18 January 1877, in Berlin. Wilhelm I died on 9 March 1888. He was succeeded by their son, as Frederick III. Frederick III died on 15 June 1888. He was succeeded by her grandson, as Wilhelm II. Augusta of Saxe-Weimar died aged 78, on 7 January 1890, in Berlin. She was buried in the Mausoleum of Charlottenburg.

Eileen Evelyn Garson was born on 29 September 1908, in London, England. She was the daughter of Mrs. and Mr. Garson. She was educated at the University of London. Eileen Garson married Edwin A. Snelson in 1932. In 1932, Greer Garson made her stage debut in Street Scene. Discovered by Louis B. Mayer she soon was on her way to Hollywood. Garson and Snelson were divorced in 1937. In 1939, she returned to London for filming with MGM. In 1939, Garson appeared as Katherine Chipping in Goodbye, Mr. Chips and Linda Bronson Holland in Remember? In 1940, she starred as Elizabeth Bennet in an adaptation of Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice opposite Laurence Olivier as Fitzwilliam Darcy. In 1941, as Edna Kahly Gladney in Blossoms in the Dust and Mrs. Claire Woodruff  in When Ladies Meet. In 1942, Garson appeared as Paula Ridgeway in Randm Harvest and Kay Miniver in Mrs. Miniver. Greer was awarded with an Oscar as Best Actress for her role in Mrs. Miniver. In 1943, she was Marie Curie in Madame Curie. Greer Garson married her second husband, Richard Ney in 1943. In 1944, she starred as Susie Parkington in Mrs. Parkington. In 1945, as Mary Rafferty in The Valley of Decision with Gregory Peck and Emily Sears in Adventure. In 1947, Marise Aubert in Desire Me. Garson and Ney were divorced in 1947. In 1948, Julia Packett in Julia Misbehaves. In 1949, Irene Forsyte in That Forsyte Woman. Greer Garson married her third husband, E. Fogelson in 1949. In 1972, Greer Garson became Dame of the Order of the British Empire. In 1993, an honorary Commander of the British Empire. According to Greer Garson; "Starting out to make money is the greatest mistake in life. Do what you feel you have a flair for doing, and if you are good enough at it, the money will come." She continued; "All I know about getting something that you want is that there are three essential things: wanting, trying and getting the opportunity, the breaks. None works alone without the others. Wanting is basic. Trying is up to you. And the breaks - I do know this, they always happen." And; "I think the mirror should be tilted slightly upward when it's reflecting life - toward the cheerful, the tender, the compassionate, the brave, the funny, the encouraging, all those things - and not tilted down to the gutter part of the time, into the troubled vistas of conflict." Greer Garson died of heart failure on 6 April 1996, in Dallas, Texas. She was buried at Sparkman Hillcrest Memorial Park, in Dallas. Greer Garson has a Star on Hollywood Walk of Fame, at 1651 Vine Street.

19-20th Cent. Maria Amélia d'Orléans, Queen Consort of Portugal and the Algarves.



Princess Amélie Marie Louise Helene d'Orléans was born on 28 September 1865, in York House, Twickenham, London, England. She was the daughter of Marie Isabelle d'Orléans, Countess of Paris (21 September 1848 - 23 April 1919) and Louis-Philippe Albert d'Orléans, Count of Paris (24 August 1838 - 8 September 1894). Her maternal grandparents were Maria Luisa Fernanda of Spain, Duchess of Montpensier (30 January 1832 - 2 February 1897) and Antoine Marie Philippe Louis d'Orleans, Duke of Montpensier (31 July 1824 - 4 February 1890). Her paternal grandparents were Helen Louise, Duchess of Mecklenburg-Schwerin (24 January 1814 - 17 May 1858) and Ferdinand Philippe, Duc de Orléans. Amélie's parents were married on 30 May 1864. Her siblings were: Louis-Philippe Robert, Duc de Orléans (1869-1926), Hélène Louise Henriette d'Orléans (1871-1951), Charles d'Orléans (1875-1875), Isabelle d'Orléans (1878-1961), Jacques d'Orléans (1880-1881), Louise Françoise Marie Laure d'Orléans (1882-1958) and Ferdinand d'Orléans, Duc de Montpensier (1884-1924). In 1871, the family returned to France. They lived in the Hôtel Matignon, in Paris and in the Château d'Eu, in Normandy. In 1873, the Count de Paris withdrew his claims to the French Throne in favour of Henri, Duc de Bordeaux et Count de Chambord (1820-1883). Princess Amélie d'Orléans married Prince Carlos of Portugal (28 September 1863 - 1 February 1908) on 22 May 1886. He was the son of Maria Pia of Savoy, Queen Consort of Portugal (16 October 1847 - 5 July 1911) and Luis I, King of Portugal (31 October 1838 - 19 October 1889). She became known as Maria Amélia d'Orléans in Portugal. The Couple had three children.

Her father-in-law, Luis I died on 19 October 1889, in Cascais, Portugal. He was interred in the Royal Pantheon, Monastery of São Vicente de Fora, Lisbon. He was succeeded by her husband as, Carlos I, King of Portugal and the Algarves with Maria Amélia as his Queen Consort. In 1892, Pope Leo XIII gave a Golden Rose to Maria Amélia. Her father, Louis-Philippe died in exile on 8 September 1894, at Stowe House, in Buckinghamshire. Her sister, Princess Hélène d'Orléans married Prince Emanuele Filiberto, 2nd Duke of Aosta (1869-1931) on 25 June 1895, at Kingston-on-Thames. Her sister, Princess Louise d'Orléans married Prince Carlos of Bourbon-Two Sicilies (1870-1949) on 16 November 1907, in Wood Norton, Evesham, Worcestershire. The Royal family was shot at on 1 February 1908, in Terreiro do Paço, Lisbon. Her husband, Carlos I died immediately and her son, Luis Filipe died within hours of the assassination on 1 February 1908, in Terreiro do Paço, Lisbon. Her son, Prince Manuel was hit in the arm, while Maria Amélia was unharmed. Prince Manuel was proclaimed King of Portugal. King Manuel II was deposed by the 5 October 1910 Revolution. The Portuguese First Republic was established, while the Royal family left Portugal to exile. Her mother-in-law, Maria Pia died on 5 July 1911, in Italy. She was interred in the Royal mausoleum in the Basilica of Superga, near Turin. Her mother, Marie-Isabelle died on 23 April 1919, in Villamanrique de la Condesa, near Seville. Maria Amélia died on 25 October 1951, at Château de Bellevue, in Versailles. She was buried in São Vicente de Fora, Lisbon. Maria Amélia d'Orléans was the last Queen Consort of Portugal.

19-20th Cent. Cléo de Mérode

Cléopatra Diane de Mérode was born on 27 September 1875, in Paris, France. She was the daughter of Mrs and Mr. Karl Freiherr von Merode (1853-1909). Her father was a Austrian painter. Called Cléo in ca 1882, she entered the Opera School of Dance. In 1888, De Mérode appeared in the ballet Choryhée, in Paris. In 1895, she was painted by Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec. In 1896, when De Mérode danced in Phrynee, in the Ballet of the Opera of Bordeaux, Leopold II, King of Belgium was in the audience. After she received a bouquet of roses from the King, gossip spread that she was his latest mistress. De Mérode was not happy as she saw it damaging for her reputation, but the King apparently did not mind at all being nicknamed Cléopold. In 1901,  Cléo de Mérode was painted by the artist Giovanni Boldini (1842-1931) and József Rippl-Rónai. She was also painted by Georges Jules Victor Clairin (1843-1919) and Friedrich August von Kaulbach. In 1926, De Mérode appeared in the film Frauen der Leidenschaft. While in Wien, she caught the attention of the artist Gustav Klimt (1862-1918). Cléo de Mérode married Luis de Perinat. He was an ambassador to France and a sculptor. Cléo de Mérode was admired for her beauty and her style set the trend of La Belle Époque. During World War I, she danced for the troops. After performing with the Folies Bergères, the Russian Ballet, in Europe and the United States, she retired to Biarritz, in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques. In 1955, she published her autobiography, La Ballet de Ma Vie. Cléo de Mérode died on 17 October 1966. She was interred in the Père Lachaise Cemetery, in Paris. Cléo de Mérode is the model of the sculpture, The Dancer by Alexandre Falguière

Juliet Anne Prowse was born on 25 September 1936, in Bombay, Maharashtra, India. She grew up in South Africa. Studying dance from a young age, she later attended the Royal Academy of Dance. In 1960, Prowse appeared as Claudine in the musical Can-Can, opposite Frank Sinatra. Can-Can premiered on 9 March 1960. Also in 1960, she starred as Lili in G.I. Blues with Elvis Presley. G.I. Blues premiered on 23 November 1960. In 1961, as Francina in The Fiercest Heart, Ursula Poe in The Right Approach, Rena Mitchell in The Second Time Around. In 1962, as Daisy June in The Red Skelton Show. Juliet Prowse and Frank Sinatra were engaged in 1962. Prowse and Sinatra later broke off their engagement. In 1963, she was Angel Crown in Who Killed Harris Crown? in Burke's Law. In 1964, Renee De Armand in Who Killed the Tall One in the Middle? in Burke's Law. In 1965, Jenny in Run for Your Wife, Marion Davis in Dingaka and in Who Killed Teddy Bear? In 1965-1966, she was Mona McCluskey in Mona McCluskey. In 1967, Aphrodite in The Danny Thomas Hour. In 1989, she was attacked by a leopard while filming Circus of the Stars. Later in 1989, she was attacked again by the same leopard during a promotial stint. In 1994, she was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. In the summer of 1995, Juliet Prowse appeared in Sugar Babies opposite Mickey Rooney, in Las Vegas. Juliet Prowse died of cancer aged 59, on 14 September 1996, in Los Angeles, California. She was cremated.

20th Cent. Ballerina Svetlana Beriosova

Svetlana Beriosova was born on 24 September 1932, in Kaunas, Lithuania. She was the daughter of Mrs. and Mr. Nicolas Beriosoff. Her father was the Ballet Master at the Lithuanian State Opera. In 1940, the family moved to the United States. Her mother died in 1942. Svetlana Beriosova studied ballet under Ludmila Shollar and Anatole Vilzak, in New York City. In 1947, she made her debut with the Ottawa Ballet. Later in 1947, she joined the Metropolitan Ballet, in London. In 1950, she joined the second company of the Sadler's Wells Ballet. In 1952, the first company of the Sadler's Wells Ballet. In 1955, she became a Prima Ballerina. In 1956, she danced in John Cranko's The Prince of the Pagodas, in Covent Garden, London. In 1957, Svetlana Berisova appeared in Cinderella at Television. Svetlana Beriosova married Mohammed Masud Raza Khan on 23 January 1959. In 1961, she danced in Ashton's Persephone. In 1964, Svetlana Beriosova appeared in The Soldier's Tale. In 1968, in Frederick Ashton's Enigma Variations. Beriosova and Raza Khan were divorced in 1974. Svetlana Beriosova appeared as the Tsarina in Anastasia, Aurora in Sleeping Beauty, Cinderella, Coppelia, Giselle, Tsarevna in The Firebird, Les Noces, Odette, Ondine, Persephone, Swan Lake and Sylvia. She danced with the Ballet Russe, the Grand Ballet de Monte Carlo,  the Metropolitan Ballet and the Royal Ballet of England. In 1975, she retired from stage and devoted herself to coaching and teaching. Svetlana Beriosova died of cancer aged 66, on Tuesday, 10 November 1998, in Kensington, London.

Rosemarie Magdelena Albach-Retty was born on 23 September 1938, in Wien, Austria. She was the daughter of Magda Schneider and Wolf Albach-Retty. Her paternal grandparents were Rosa Albach-Retty and Karl Albach. She had a younger brother, Wolfgang Albach-Retty. Her mother, Magda Schneider was an actress. In 1953, she graduated from the Goldstein boarding school, near Salzburg. Also in 1953, she made her film debut as Evchen Forster in Wenn der Weibe Flieder Wieder Blüht. In 1954, she starred as Anna Oberholzer in Fireworks and Queen Victoria in Victoria in Dover. In 1955, Romy Schneider appeared as Elisabeth, Duchess in Bavaria (1837-1898) in Sissi with Karlheinz Böhm, directed by Ernst Marischka, Constanze Hübner in Die Deutschmeister and Niddy Hoevelmann in Der letzte Mann. In 1956, she starred as Elisabeth of Bavaria in Sissi - The Young Empress, directed by Ernst Marischka and Kitty Dupont in Kitty und die Grobe Welt. In 1957, as Elisabeth of Bavaria in Sissi - The Fateful Years of an Empress, directed by Ernst Marischka Maud in The Girl and the Legend and Anne-Claire Jouvain in Monpti. Romy Schneider and Horst Buchholz were engaged in 1957. Her son, David-Christopher died on 5 July 1981, in France after he was impaled on a fence. She never overcame the loss. In 1982, she was Elsa Wiener in La Passante du Sans-Souci. According to Romy Schneider; "One can remain eternally young if each day, one grows rich by marvelous moments. I am convinced that at the end of my life, all these sufferings and all these joys, the memories, the goods like the bad ones, give us a heat which resembles those that give us and which love us." She continued; "I wish to present myself in front of the camera, each time under the features of a different woman, I would like to live and apprehend the problems, the conflicts, the feelings and the impulses of women radically different from me." And; "I want to learn, I want to develop, I want to discover all that is in me." Romy Schneider died on 29 May 1982, in Paris, France. She was buried in the Boissy-Sans-Avoir cemetery.

Edmund Blair Leighton died on 1 September 1922. Leighton was a man of many talents including drawing, painting and writing. I love his works and have always had them with me, but the man himself I do not know so much about. Still admiring his works I feel that I do know him. Because he is there - in the animals, the beauty, the birds, the boats, the brides, the children, the colors, the flowers, the generosity, the gentlemen, the grace, the gowns, the hope, the joy, the kisses, the Kings, the medieval ladies, the legends, the light, the longing, the love, the music, the passion, the pride, the roses, the sea, the secrets, the ships, the silence, the sky, the soldiers and the sorrow.

19th Cent. Auguste Toulmouche

 
Auguste Toulmouche was born on 21 September 1829, in Breton, Nantes, France. He was the son of Rose Sophie Mercier and Émile Toulmouche. From 1841, he was educated in design, in Nantes. In 1844, Toulmouche continued his education with painting under the portraitist Biron, in Nantes. In 1846, he became a student of Marc Charles Gabriel Gleyre (1806-1874) in Paris. In 1848, Toulmouche made his Salon debut. In 1852, the Empire was restored and  Charles Louis Napoleon Bonaparte (20 April 1808 - 9 January 1873) became Napoléon III, Emperor of the French. In 1852, Toulmouche won a medal at the Salon, and his paintig, La Fille was acquired by the Emperor. In 1853, Eugénie de Montijo, Empress Consort of the French (5 May 1826 - 11 July 1920) purchased his painting, The First Step. In 1861, Toulmouche won another medal at the Salon. In 1861, he painted The New Arrival. Auguste Toulmouche was married in 1862. The bride was a cousin of Claude Monet (14 November 1840 - 5 December 1926). In 1866, Toulmouche painted La Fiancée Hésitante. In 1867, Consolation. In 1870, Toulmouche received the Legion of Honor award. In 1878, Toulmouche was honored with a medal at the Exposition Universelle. In 1879, he painted The Letter. In 1881,  Young Woman in an Interior. In 1883, An Elegant Beauty, An Exotic Beauty in an Interior and The Love Letter. In 1886, A Young Woman in a Rose Garden and Le Baiser. In 1889, Vanity. Auguste Toulmouche died aged 61, on 16 October 1890, in Paris, France.
