Karin Månsdotter was born on 6 November 1550. She was the daughter of Ingrid and Måns. In 1565, she became the mistress of Erik XIV, King of Sweden (13 December 1533 - 26 February 1577) when she was the maid of his half sister Princess Elizabeth of Sweden (1549-1597). He was the son of Catherine of Saxe-Lauenburg (1513-1535) and Gustaf I, King of Sweden (1496-1560). She gave birth to a daughter by the King, Sigrid in 1566. Karin Månsdotter and Erik XIV were married morganatically in 1567. When they were married officially she was ennobled and crowned Katarina Magnusdotter, Queen Consort of Sweden on 4 July 1568, in Stockholm.

In 1568, Erik XIV was deposed. He was succeeded by his half brother, as Johan III, King of Sweden (20 December 1537 - 17 November 1592). Johan III and his wife, Catherine Jagiellon (1 November 1526 - 16 September 1583) was crowned King and Queen Consort of Sweden on 10 July 1569. In 1573, Katarina and the children were moved to the Castle of Turku, in Finland. In 1575, her son, Gustaf was taken from her and sent to Poland. Erik XIV died on 26 February 1577, in Örbyhus Castle, Örbyhus. He was buried at Västerås Cathedral, in Västerås. Catherine Jagiellon died on 16 September 1583, in Stockholm. She was buried in the Royal crypt, in the Uppsala Cathedral. In 1587, her daughter Sigrid became lady-in-waiting to Princess Anna of Finland. Johan III died on 17 November 1592, in Stockholm. He was buried in Uppsala Cathedral. He was succeeded by his son, Sigismund III Vasa (20 June 1566 - 30 April 1632). Her son, Gustaf died in 1607. Katarina Magnusdotter died on 13 September 1612. She was buried in the Cathedral of Turku. Her daughter, Sigrid died in 1633.
