16-17th Cent. Isabella Clara Eugenia of Spain


Infanta Isabella Clara Eugenia was born on 12 August 1566, in Segovia, Spain. She was the daughter of Élisabeth de Valois, Queen Consort of Spain (2 April 1545 - 3 October 1568) and Felipe II, King of Spain (21 May 1527 - 13 September 1598). Her maternal grandparents were Catherine de' Medici (13 April 1519 - 5 January 1589) and Henri II (31 March 1519 - 10 July 1559). Her paternal grandparents were Isabella of Portugal and Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor. Isabella's parents were married in 1599. She had a younger sister, Infanta Catalina Micaela of Spain (10 October 1567 - 6 November 1597). Isabella's mother was her father's third wife. Felipe II married first, Maria Manuela, Princess of Portugal (15 October 1527 - 12 August 1545). Maria died after she gave birth to a son, Don Carlos of Spain (8 July 1545 - 24 July 1568). His second wife was Mary I, Queen of England (18 February 1516 - 17 November 1558). Her mother, Élisabeth died during childbirth along with her newborn son, on 3 October 1568. Felipe II married his fourth wife, Anna of Austria (1 November 1549 - 26 October 1580) on 4 May 1570, in Prague. Anna and Felipe II had five children: Ferdinand, Prince of Asturias (4 December 1571 - 18 October 1578), Carlos Lorenzo (12 August 1573 - 30 June 1575), Diego, Prince of Asturias (15 August 1575 - 21 November 1582), Felipe III, King of Spain (3 April 1578 - 31 March 1621) and Maria (14 February 1580 - 5 August 1583). Anna died on 26 October 1580. Her father, Felipe II died on 13 September 1598, in Madrid, Spain. Isabella married Archduke Albert of Austria (15 November 1559 - 13 July 1621) on 18 April 1599, in Valencia. He was the son of Maria of Spain, Holy Roman Empress (21 June 1528 - 26 February 1603) and Maximilian II, Holy Roman Emperor. From 1601, the couple ruled the Spanish Netherlands together.

Her husband, Albert of Austria died on 13 July 1621. In 1609 and 1625, she was painted by the artist, Peter Paul Rubens (1577-1640). Isabella Clara Eugenia of Spain died aged 67, on 1 December 1633, in Brussels, Brabant.
