Victor Amadeus was born on 26 June 1726, in Turin. He was the son of Polyxena of Hessen-Rotenburg-Rheinfels (21 September 1706 - 13 January 1735) and Charles Emmanuel III, King of Sardinia (27 April 1701 - 20 February 1773). His maternal grandparents were Eleonore of Löwenstein-Wertheim-Rochefort (1686-1753) and Ernest Leopold, Landgrave of Hesse-Rotenburg (1684-1749). His parents were married on 20 August 1724, in Thorn. His siblings were: Eleonora Maria (28 February 1728 - 14 August 1781), Maria Luisa (25 March 1729 - 22 June 1767), Maria Felicita (19 March 1730 - 13 May 1801), Emanuele Filiberto, Duke of Aosta (17 May 1731 - 23 April 1735) and Carlo Francesco, Duke of Chablais (23 July 1733 - 28 December 1733). His mother, Polyxena died on 13 January 1735, in Turin. She was first buried in the Cathedral S. Giovanni Battista, since 1786 in the Basilica of Superga, in Turin. Victor Amadeus married Maria Antonietta of Spain (17 November 1729 - 19 September 1785) on 31 May 1750, at Oulx, near Turin, in Italy. She was the daughter of Elisabeth Farnese (25 October 1692 - 11 July 1766) and Felipe V, King of Spain (19 December 1683 - 9 July 1746). They had twelve children.

Charles Emmanuel III died on 20 February 1773. He was succeeded by Victor Amadeus II. His wife, Maria Antonietta died on 19 September 1785, in the Castle of Moncalieri, near Turin, Italy. She was interred in the Basilica of Superga. His troops were defeated by the French on 13 April 1796, at the Battle of Millesimo. Victor Amadeus III was forced to sign the Treaty of Paris. Victor Amadeus III died on 16 October 1796, at the Castle of Moncalieri.
